The film is based on a true story; the scenes and descriptions come from the actual events and places that the two protagonists experienced.
After meeting each other merely eight times in total, Lee, a young filmmaker, and Hsieh, a national swimming coach, decide to embark on a 182 day motorcycle trip to Taroko - where Lee and his father used to enjoy daylily soup together. They also agree to visit Koto Island, where Hsieh dreams of dressing in aboriginal attire to swim with flying fish.
After wandering into a village that was covered by landslide and discovering a drawbridge with a romantic history, the pair end up changing their plans -- then Lee realizes that Hsieh is actually fleeing from a marriage.
The duo crosses five mountain ranges, explore three generations of history, enjoy beautiful sites and delicious food. Through this journey together, the two friends grow closer while unforgettable memories are shared.
